Brothers turn dream into carefully crafted Laurentia Vineyard & Winery in Madison Township

The recent opening of Laurentia Vineyard & Winery in Madison Township has resulted in the closest winery to Mentor, a fact not lost on those who battle the perception Ohio wine country is too distant to be worth an afternoon or evening.

Although it’s just minutes south on Route 528 after exiting Interstate 90, Laurentia’s entrance soon dispels the notion that it’s close to anything. The sense of entering a Western ranch begins when driving through the upside down U that form its gates on the east side of Route 528. Pass rows of vineyards before the road is embraced on both sides by a thick forest. 

It’s almost a half mile from Route 528 before the rough-hewn wood and stone tasting room comes into view.

Laurentia is the vision of Gary and Leonard Blackie, Madison brothers who grew up nearby and attended Madison Schools, graduating in 1967 and 1974, respectively. In fact, the varsity crosscountry track, where Gary ran, was once on the very property where the winery now sits.
