De Nora Tech manufacturing facility proposal clears hurdle in Mentor

It’s still a couple of years in the making, but a major manufacturer is a step closer to moving to Mentor. The city Planning Commission recently approved a preliminary site plan for Milan, Italy-based De Nora Tech Inc. to build a 130,000-square-foot facility at 6300 Tin Man Road, off of Tyler Boulevard. The project includes relocating 165 jobs to Mentor. The investment will enable De Nora Tech to remain competitive in the marketplace as well as provide for future growth over many decades to come,” said Jamie Schafer, project manager for the new facility.

The company produces electrodes for the electrochemical industry and has nine manufacturing facilities in seven countries. Its current U.S. plant is in Chardon, where it has been since 1970. The company’s U.S. headquarters are in Concord Township.

The hope is to be up and running at the new location in 2017. “This project has been planned for a very long time,” said owner’s representative Jeff Bogart. “And it’s going to take another two years to bring it to fruition, because there’s a tremendous amount of work involved in creating a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility today. “It’s not like we did 20-30 years ago. … These things are highly technical and they take a great deal of work to pull them off successfully.” The applicant has indicated that the construction timeline for the project includes applying for a grading permit next in order to begin site preparation.  In part, this will involve removal of earth and crushed concrete leftovers from the Route 2 widening work done in 2010. Some of the materials will be used in the new development.
