Fredon Corp. CEO Roger Sustar joked that even at nearly 74 years old, he still doesn’t know what he wants to do when he grows up. His Mentor-based manufacturing company gave fifth- and sixth-grade girls June 13 an opportunity to explore potential career options.

Fredon was the first tour stop during the weeklong girls-only Summer Manufacturing Institute camp held at Auburn Career Center in Concord Township.

The goal for the 11 girls participating in this year’s camp is to keep an open mind about their future and not rule anything out, Alice Cable said. Cable, the executive director for the nonprofit Alliance for Working Together Foundation, is leading the camp. AWT is putting on the camp in conjunction with Auburn, OhioMeansJobs Geauga County and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office.

The students got a chance to tour Fredon’s shop floor, getting an up-close look at what is produced at the site. The tour also highlighted the gender-gap in manufacturing. Cable said there were only two or three women on the shop floor. We need to encourage women to pursue these careers,” she said.

There are a lot of initiatives to get women into manufacturing. Encouragement and setting them up to succeed are the best ways to do that, Cable said.

Students will have a chance to tour other area manufacturing facilities during the week, including Suburban Manufacturing and Libra Industries. The theme of camp running June 12-16 is “It’s Our Time” and campers will create an LED alarm clock.

Speakers also are visiting students throughout the week. During the first day of the camp, female engineers from Avery Dennison came to speak and answer questions from the campers.

“I think it’s great any time young girls have an opportunity to experience things together,” Fredon President Alyson Scott said.
