Lake County's plant nursery industry is a thriving one. The industry has over 1300 employees and sees annual sales of approximately $90 million. The size of operations within the industry varies from a single acre to over 900. In-state sales from the industry are estimated to support a further 465 jobs. Lake County's geography is a major factor in the strength of this industry. The nurseries are concentrated in a 20 mile strip along Lake Erie. Ice Age glaciers deposited a wide variety of soils in the area, which it possible to grow a wide variety of plants with differing needs. The lake itself prevents the area from experiencing temperature extremes, and it provides a ready supply of fresh water. Being located within 500 miles of 2/3rds of U.S. population, it is easy for the nurseries to sell their products all over the country.
